Want to draw hummingbirds to your yard? They feed on the sweet nectar from flowers, and you can duplicate that by offering up a hummingbird feeder filled with sugar water. And, it’s easy. Just dissolve one part white cane sugar in four parts water (1:4). That’s it! Don’t use food coloring, as it can be harmful. The water doesn’t need to be boiled, although that will kill off any bacteria in it. Store any leftover solution in the refrigerator. Replace the mixture in the feeder every few days to prevent mold and bacteria growth. The mixture will last longer in cooler weather, but keep an eye on it. If it gets cloudy, you’ve waited too long. Clean the feeder if it gets moldy.
If you provide a feeder with a perch, it gives the birds an opportunity to rest while drinking, and you’ll enjoy these enchanting little birds even more.
